4 Best Toners for Men, according to a Dermatologist
In a hurry? Here are our top picks:

BEST FOR CLEAN SKINCARE

ZELEN Life Toner

Toners are the most under appreciated and often maligned skincare products.

This is mostly due to a poor understanding of their capabilities. They are so much more than just a way to get rid of oil and dirt.

The right toner, for the right skin type and needs, can make all the difference in your skincare regimen. Toners can balance your pH thereby keeping your skin functioning properly, prep skin for your moisturizer to absorb properly, hydrate and nourish dry skin, and provide anti-aging benefits.

This article will discuss certain things you need to consider before purchasing a toner, our selection of the best toners for men, why the toners were chosen as the best, and some frequently asked questions about toners.

Quick summary

Before you buy: 4 things to consider when purchasing a toner for men

1. Skin type

The most important factor when considering a toner is skin type. That can make or break your toner experience. If you have sensitive skin and select a toner for oily skin, your skin will be irritated and you will be unhappy. So, make sure you know your skin type and the ingredients that will help it.

Here are the 5 basic skin types:

Dry skin:

  • Flaky, dull skin that feels rough or tight.

Oily skin:

Sensitive skin:

  • Flaky, red skin that feels itchy or burning.

Normal skin:

  • Not dry or shiny, and feels fine.

Combination skin:

  • Oily in T zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry on the rest of the face.

Something to keep in mind:

Men have more active sebaceous glands, and consequently more pores, than women. Their pores and sebaceous glands are both larger than those of women. Because males produce twice as much sebum as women, their skin is oilier and shinier.

2. Ingredients to look for

There are some ingredients, based on your skin type, that you should look for when you are selecting a toner.

Dry skin:

Oily skin:

  • Look for hydroxy acids or witch hazel to control the oil.

Sensitive skin:

  • Look for lavender or geranium if you have acne-prone sensitive skin. Look for aloe, rosemary, or chamomile to calm the skin.

Normal skin:

  • You can use anything you want. Lucky!

Combination skin:

  • Try a product for dry skin in your dry areas and one for oily skin in your oily areas.

Anti-aging:

  • If you have dry skin, look for vitamin E, green tea, or cucumber. If you have oily skin, look for hydroxy acids, retinoids, or vitamin C.

3. Ingredients to avoid

Even if you have tough oily skin, some ingredients can still irritate your skin. Here are some that you should avoid, especially if you have sensitive skin:

Sulfates:

  • These may be irritating to some people or clog your pores leading to acne.

Parabens:

  • Some may find these irritating. Another concern is that they might disrupt estrogen hormones and increase the risk of breast cancer.

Dyes and fragrances:

  • These can irritate the skin especially those people with sensitive skin.

Mineral oil and petrolatum:

  • These can clog your pores and lead to blackheads and acne.

Alcohol:

  • This can remove oil but may dry out your skin too much. If your skin is stripped of all its natural oils, your skin will go into overdrive producing more oil. This can lead to a worsening of your oil problem as well as severe dryness and irritation of your skin.

4. Products specifically designed for men

Because men have biologically different skin than women, they need different products.

Higher levels of testosterone:

  • Oilier and more acne-prone skin (hydroxy acids, retinoids)

Thicker skin:

  • Stronger products (higher percentage of hydroxy acids)

More ingrown hairs from shaving:

  • Calming and soothing products (cucumber, aloe)
  • Exfoliants (hydroxy acids)

Unique features:

  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory to help with acne and soothe the skin
  • Anti-oxidants to help anti-aging
  • pH balancing

The best toner for:

This is a great toner for men of all skin types, with the added benefits of anti-aging ingredients to keep you looking younger and soothing ingredients to calm the skin.

Notable ingredients:

Lavender, geranium, honey

Overview:

ZELEN Life tries to make lifestyle simple. It is an innovate brand with a premium organic premium skincare routine. One of the products I will review here is their ZELEN Life Toner.

Let’s start with their packaging.

Glancing at the packaging, you definitely see and feel the premium ethos of the brand. Its green color represents a commitment to make natural products that are not only environmentally-friendly (since they are 100% recyclable) but also skin-friendly. They contain no harmful chemicals, such as parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, artificial fragrances, etc.

When holding the bottle, I can definitely feel that it is well crafted. It is made with recyclable glass and features a spray pump that makes it easy to apply. A great thing is that 1) you can either spray 3-4 pumps on a cotton pad or 2) spray directly onto your face, as the liquid comes out wide and evenly spread.

Despite the quality look of the product, I am sure you want to learn about its formula. The ingredients of this toner are simple yet very effective. It features organic lavender, geranium, and honey as its main ingredients, which are very well-known in terms of their skin benefits.

Let’s analyze the ingredients:

Lavender has long been known to be an excellent anti-inflammatory, which has been used in the treatment of eczema and psoriasis (1-4). It reduces redness and irritation from the skin and assists in bringing back its natural shine. It also has anti-microbial properties that help in the treatment of wounds. It is even an anti-oxidant, revitalizing the skin and minimizing signs of aging.

Rose geranium also has good anti-inflammatory properties, which have been very effective in reducing the effects of eczema and acne (4-8). It helps unclog the pores from dirt and dead skin cells, reducing their appearance and promoting overall skin health.

Lastly, honey has been used since ancient times for its ability to heal wounds (1, 9, 10). It helps with cell regeneration while also providing great anti-bacterial action. As a result, it creates a lighter and brighter complexion that feels youthful and refreshed. It is also a great exfoliant agent. It removes dull skin on the surface and reveals the new skin underneath it. Additionally, it creates a protective layer that keeps the hydration from escaping leaving the skin hydrated and smooth. It is considered an absolute miracle ingredient.

As said, it is free from parabens, synthetic fragrances, or other harmful chemicals that might cause irritation. While it does contain honey, which is an animal-derived ingredient, it is cruelty-free, as the brand is against animal cruelty and is PETA certified.

How does it feel on the skin:

The toner is very lightweight and refreshing on the face upon application. It dries out quickly without leaving a greasy or sticky residue behind which, is always a plus. You will definitely feel your skin calm and soothed after every application.

The scent:

The aroma of ZELEN Life’s Toner comes purely from its organic formula. It has a light scent of honey and geranium with a hint of lavender, which truly calms the mind. It is by no means heavy and goes away just after a few minutes of application. I think this is great, as it makes it suitable even for people who have sensitive noses.

However, as with all products, there are some drawbacks. If you are vegan then this product is not for you, as it contains honey. If that is the case, consider Jack Black Oil Control Toner on our list. It is a toner that is vegan-friendly. However, it is more expensive and is not suitable for sensitive skin types because it contains salicylic acid.

Additionally, while ZELEN Life’s does contain some ingredients that effectively reduce mild acne, if you are suffering from severe acne, Jack Black Oil Control might be for you. It is specifically designed for acne-prone skin types and includes ingredients such as salicylic acid, witch hazel, and AHAs which, are well-known for their anti-inflammatory, and acne-fighting capabilities.

The good:

  • Light aroma that does not irritate
  • Honey protects the skin from environmental stressors and locks the hydration in
  • Luxurious bottle that has a very practical spray pump
  • Suitable for all skin types including oily and sensitive
  • Quickly absorbant

Things to think about:

  • Essential oils – Some people may find them to be irritating.
  • Not vegan but cruelty-free
  • A bit on the expensive side as it only contains natural ingredients

Bottom line:

This natural plant-based toner does it all. It helps soothe irritated skin, removes dirt and oil from acne-prone skin, and has anti-aging ingredients to help keep you looking youthful.

Unique features:

  • Strong astringent properties
  • Anti-inflammatory to soothe skin
  • Mint scent

The best toner for:

This toner works well for normal to oily skin types but may be too irritating for sensitive skin types.

Notable ingredients:

Witch hazel, allantoin, vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate), aloe

Overview:

Baxter of California Herbal Mint Toner for Men provides extreme value for the amount you get at this price point. It is a toner that is mainly suitable for normal to oily skin types, as it is packed with powerful ingredients that help control oil production. Some of its main ingredients are witch hazel, allantoin, vitamin E, and aloe vera.

Witch hazel is a potent astringent which removes dirt and excess oil from the skin (1, 11, 12). Its reduces the production of oil, along with its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a powerful ingredient that helps to minimize acne and eczema. Whatsmore, it can also prevent acne from occurring. It is rich in tannins, which according to a study, it can act as a barrier, preventing inflammations (47).

Allantoin is an anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant ingredient that helps calm and soothe the skin (19). It promotes wound healing as it assists in accelerating cell regeneration. This makes it perfect for treating abrasions and burns.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent sun-induced free radical damage to the skin and stabilize its barrier function. This protects it from the harsh environmental elements (1, 16-18). It is the predominant antioxidant present in the skin barrier.

Aloe vera is one of the most used ingredients in skincare products and not without a reason. It is a plant that not only is rich in antioxidants but also in anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. Its antioxidant qualities (rich in vitamins C & E) assist in bringing back skin elasticity. It reduces the signs of aging (such as wrinkles and fine lines) by promoting the production of collagen.

Additionally, it forms a barrier that keeps the hydration locked in while also protecting from environmental stressors. This leaves a skin that is soft and calm. Except from the above ingredients, this toner includes other natural ingredients such as cucumber, chamomile, etc., which adds to its anti-inflammatory and oil balancing action (1, 13-15, 20-22).

Application and texture:

Baxter of California Herbal Mint Toner for Men is very lightweight and is by no means greasy. Upon application, you definitely feel a refreshed and cooling effect which I found very soothing.

Unfortunately, unlike other toners on our list, the bottle doesn’t have a spray pump to directly apply to your face. In order to apply the toner, drop 4-5 drops on a cotton pad and spread it evenly on your face.

The bottle and packaging:

The packaging definitely looks premium. But I am a bit disappointed with the overall design. Firstly, the lack of a spray pump (while it might not be a big of an issue for a lot of people,) it was for me. The process of application was more time-consuming.

Let’s be honest. The whole bottle is made out of plastic and is very simple which, doesn’t reflect the premium feeling of the brand. I’ve also found the cap to open easily on its own. This can cause a liquid leak if the bottle is not in an upright position. Nevertheless, the bottle is large in size and, you get a great amount of product for the price.

Now, let’s discuss its scent:

I found the scent of this product not very lightweight but not overpowering at the same time. It has a masculine mild minty scent that is artificially derived from its fragrance/parfum. The smell is clean and refreshing. However, if you are sensitive to artificial fragrances, this toner is not for you. Consider checking out the other natural toners on this list that don’t include artificial fragrances. Such as, Jack Black Oil Control Toner or the ZELEN Life Toner. Both have a scent that is very lightweight and non-irritating.

Furthermore, if you have dry skin you should avoid this toner. This is because it contains a lot of oil-minimizing ingredients. Consider using the the ZELEN Life Toner It is formulated with honey which is highly hydrating, rich in antioxidants, and very effective in healing wounds.

The good:

  • Great for normal to oily skin types
  • Lightweight, non-greasy texture
  • Large product size for the prize

Things to think about:

  • Not a good choice for dry skin
  • Artificial fragrance – Might be irritating to some.

Bottom line:

If you have oily skin or suffer from acne, this toner can help. It also has the added benefits of anti-aging ingredients.

The best toner for:

This toner is great for oily, acne-prone skin and is packed full of anti-aging ingredients.

Notable ingredients:

Red macroalgae extract, salicylic acid, witch hazel

Overview:

Jack Black Oil Control Toner is a toner that is specifically designed for oily skin types. It helps balance excess oil levels on your skin without drying it. Its main ingredients are red macroalgae extract, salicylic acid and, witch hazel.

Let’s consider its ingredients.

The red macroalgae extract has potent photoprotective capabilities. It acts as a mild, all-natural SPF. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins (23-26), assisting in the overall healthiness of the skin while also minimizing the effects of aging. As an added plus, it is also a great hydrant, as it provides great moisturizing properties. Also, it has been shown to help heal wounds and lighten dark sunspots on the skin.

Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant (Beta Hydroxy Acid) with its main purpose is to decrease the production of oil on the skin and get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores. This makes it particularly effective in preventing and fighting acne breakouts (1). It penetrates underneath the skin’s surface, reducing the amount of sebum from the pores. This assists in minimizing the appearance of large pores as well.

One side effect of salicylic acid though is the fact that it causes sensitivity to sunlight. The photoprotective capabilities of microalgae mitigate this to some extent, but you should still avoid direct contact with the sun without wearing a high SPF sunscreen.

Witch hazel is an ingredient that I already covered above. It is rich in anti-inflammatory properties that calm the skin and help reduce excess sebum production (1, 11, 12). This effectively combats severe acne breakouts as well. Additionally, this toner is loaded with other anti-oxidants, such as birch bark, cucumber, retinoids, vitamin E, ginseng, iris, and moringa (1, 13-18, 27-37). These can help protect the skin from environmental stressors that cause premature aging.

Furthermore, it also includes a lot of alpha hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, and citric acid, which in combination with salicylic acid, provide a stronger action against blemishes.

Application and packaging:

Like the previously reviewed toners, it is very light and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. Like the Baxter of California, you need to apply it using a cotton pad as the bottle doesn’t come with a spray pump. The bottle design looks good and is similar in design to Baxter’s. While it doesn’t scream premium, I didn’t experience any issues with the cap closure.

The scent:

I’m going, to be honest! The scent of this toner is almost non-existent. I couldn’t distinguish any distinctive character to it. But it was pleasant. It doesn’t contain any artificial fragrance. So even if you are sensitive to scent, you are pretty much safe to use it. However, always make sure to check its full list of ingredients to identify if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

One of the drawbacks of this toner is that it is not suitable for dry or sensitive skin types. Salicylic acid can cause redness and burns if the skin is very sensitive. Also, the ingredients included in this toner can cause the skin to overdry (especially witch hazel in combination with salicylic acid). If you are looking for a cleanser suitable for sensitive skin types, the consider ZELEN Life’s Toner. It is formulated with lavender, geranium, and honey, which provide a balance between hydration and oil balancing qualities.

The good:

  • Strong anti-acne action
  • Soothes and calms the skin
  • Minimizes excess oil
  • Almost no scent is present
  • Quickly absorbant

Things to think about:

  • Not a good choice for dry or sensitive skin.
  • Some found it cause their skin to be red and irritated
  • This contains salicylic acid, so make sure your skin is protected from the sun with sunscreen.

Bottom line:

If you have oily or acne-prone skin and are looking for powerful anti-acne action, this toner is a great choice.

The best toner for:

This is a great toner for normal to oily skin types which is full of anti-aging ingredients to help prevent premature aging.

Notable ingredients:

Aloe, glycolic acid, green tea, tea tree, witch hazel

Overview:

MenScience Androceuticals Advanced Face Tonic is a toner that is not only oil-free but also alcohol-free. It is very suitable for men who struggle with excess oil. It is packed with alpha-hydroxy acids, aloe, green tea, tea tree, and witch hazel.

The ingredients:

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, and citric acid are included in its formulation. As I said earlier, they are great at treating acne because they decrease oil production and exfoliate dead skin cells, which can clog pores (1). They also have great anti-aging benefits, such as removing dark spots and treating fine lines and wrinkles.

Witch hazel is also explained previously. It is a great astringent which, removes dirt and oil (1, 11, 12). It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

Tea tree oil has been used for thousands of years (1). It is a great anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent that can help treat acne and dermatitis (39-41). This assists in relieving itchiness and discomfort that are caused by several different skin infections. Studies have shown comparable efficacy to benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne but without the irritation of benzoyl peroxide. Additionally, it is also a great ingredient that reduces redness and swelling.

Green tea is rich in antioxidants that protect from environmental stressors and offer anti-aging benefits (1, 42-46). Also, it has been shown to help prevent skin cancer formation, reduce sebum production, and clear clogged pores.

Application and texture:

This toner is ultra-lightweight and instantly absorbs upon application. It doesn’t leave any greasy residue or sticky feel but leaves your skin smoother and soothed. Some guys will also definitely love that it doesn’t make the skin shinier, as it gives a matte look that is clear and naturally vibrant.

The bottle design:

The bottle design, again like the Baxter’s and Jack Black’s toners, doesn’t reflect the premium nature of the brand. The bottle is made of plastic and has a button-based lid that opens when you press it. To be honest, I found the lid poorly designed. Most of the time it wasn’t holding the liquid from leakage when carrying around.

As for the scent, this product is almost unscented too. It doesn’t contain any artificial fragrance which, is always a welcome feature and doesn’t irritate the nose. The fragrance mostly comes from its witch hazel ingredient and is very light.

While I found it to be the best when it comes to minimizing the skin’s oil levels, its price is not exactly budget-friendy. If you are looking for a more affordable option, that also does a decent job in minimizing sebum production, consider Baxter’s of California Herbal Mint Toner. It also contains witch hazel which is an absolute hero when it comes to balancing oil. However, it is important to mention that it does contain artificial fragrance. So, keep that in mind.

The good:

  • Unclogs pores and eliminates dead skin cells
  • Very suitable for very oily skin types
  • Almost unscented
  • Quickly absorbant

Things to think about:

  • Some found it irritating and drying.
  • Problematic lid
  • Undeniably expensive

Bottom line:

If you want a toner to keep oil under control and also want powerful anti-oxidants and exfoliants, this toner is perfect for you.

Frequently asked questions

frequently asked questions 2-min

What is a toner?

Toners were originally created to remove dirt and oil. But today they can deliver anti-aging, moisturizing, and anti-inflammatory ingredients to benefit the skin. They are an essential part of everyone’s skin care routine.

Men, with thicker and oilier skin, need toners even more than women. Toners will keep oil and shine under control, which helps prevent breakouts.

Why do I need a toner?

Everyone needs to use a toner. Every skin type can benefit from the right ingredients in a toner. If you have oily skin, the toner will keep oil under control and prevent breakouts.

If you have dry skin, the right toner can deliver moisture and anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits. If you have normal skin, you can use a toner for just anti-aging.

Toners are also important for everyone because they balance the pH of the skin. When your pH is not optimal, your skin will not function properly to keep moisture in and microbes out.

How do I use a toner?

Toners are liquids that can be applied with a cotton ball. Some toners are placed on the cotton ball, which is wiped gently over the entire face. The cotton ball does not have to be saturated with toner, just enough to cover the face. Do not scrub or rub, as this can irritate the skin.

When do I use a toner?

Toner should be applied after washing your face. This gets rid of any dirt and oil that is remaining after cleansing. It also preps the skin to absorb moisturizer and any other product you apply after your toner. Toners should be applied twice a day.

Conclusion

Toners are an essential part of everyone’s skin care regimen. Once you know your skin type and know the ingredients that you should use, you will realize the benefits of toners.

For men, who have oilier and more acne-prone skin, toners are a must for keeping skin looking good and free of shine and breakouts. But toners deliver so much more for your skin.

They not only get rid of dirt and oil, but they can also help with anti-aging, moisturizing, and calming inflamed skin. In fact, after using the correct toner, you will probably wonder how you got along without toners for so long.
