The 6 Best Jojoba Oil Moisturizers (All Skin Types)
In a hurry? Here are our top picks:

BEST FOR CLEAN SKINCARE

ZELEN Life Moisturizer

Moisturizers are one of the top three essential skincare products, right behind cleansers and sunscreen. They help to keep the skin healthy and functioning correctly as a barrier that protects you from the elements.

However, not all moisturizers are created equal, and some can harm. Some include parabens, sulfates, or petrochemicals, all of which are damaging to our health. Different moisturizers also make use of other oils to help moisturize your skin.

We want to make sure you use only the best and healthiest products available, which is why we are going to look at the best jojoba oil moisturizers you can buy.

We will share with you our top six picks and a review of their ingredients, along with their pros and cons. Finally, we will tell you how we evaluate a moisturizer and answer a few common questions you may be left with.

But first, we want to give you a bit more information on how to choose the best moisturizer for you! Everyone’s skin behaves differently, which means your needs from a moisturizer may not be the same as another person’s.

Quick summary

Before you buy: 4 Things to consider when purchasing a jojoba oil moisturizer

There are many moisturizers on the market, finding the one that is right for you might be a bit of a journey. Here we have outlined a few things to simplify and hopefully shorten that process.

1. Consider your skin type and underlying conditions

To find the best moisturizer—or any skincare product—for you, you need to know your skin type. There are six types of skin: sensitive, dry, normal, combination, oily, and acne-prone skin. They all have different needs from a moisturizer.

You also want to consider your skin’s condition, does it have sun damage, dry patches, clogged pores? Different ingredients will help alleviate and treat various skin conditions—we will cover this more when looking at our top-six best jojoba oil moisturizers.

It is important to know that your skin is dynamic and always changing as you age and in response to the environment. Thus, you might need different moisturizers for different seasons, or you may need to change things up as your skin is affected by climate, sunlight, or age.

Always keep in mind:

What your skin type is and any underlying skin conditions you may have. Then use those to help you select the most effective product for your skin—revaluate both of these when you go to repurchase your moisturizer.

2. Look for added ingredients that soothe and heal

Moisturizers are meant to balance the moisture of your skin. However, many have other added ingredients that help to heal your skin and soothe irritation and inflammation. Because you have taken the time to consider what your skin needs, you can choose a product that is geared towards treating those concerns.

3. Look for short ingredient lists

Read those labels! We will discuss some types of ingredients more below. But, for this consideration, you don’t want a bunch of added fillers, stabilizers, and preservatives. Many of these are unhealthy for our skin and the rest of our body.

One of the nice things about jojoba oil is that it a shelf-stable oil that can help to do the work of a lot of those other harmful stabilizers and preservatives.

Thus, look for short lists that have beneficial ingredients at the top, as this means they constitute a higher percentage of what’s in the container. Similar to food labels, shorter ingredient lists are almost always better than longer ones.

4. Try a spot test (before purchasing if possible)

If you are in a store and they have samples of the product, apply some to your inner arm on the bicep. Go about your day and monitor the condition of your skin to see if you react. This will give you an idea of your skin’s reaction to the moisturizer before applying it to a larger area.

Some unwanted reactions develop over repeated use, but at least you’ve done all you can before committing to the purchase to make sure your skin isn’t reactive to the tested product.

If you can’t try before you buy, as is the case in the world of online shopping, then perform the spot tests when you receive your new moisturizer before applying it to a broader area.

With these considerations in mind, you will be able to approach the skincare aisle with more confidence and have the ability to make better purchasing decisions.

So, let’s dig into the six best jojoba oil moisturizers you can buy.

Unique features:

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

This is an excellent moisturizer for any time of day but especially for daytime as it helps to reduce inflammation and soothe irritated skin. The short list of ingredients lowers the potential for irritation keeping your complexion clearer throughout the day.

Notable ingredients:

Jojoba, calendula, clary sage

Overview:

ZELEN Life is a brand that is characterized for its natural approach when creating skincare. The ZELEN Life Moisturizer is no exception, as it’s been expertly formulated to hydrate, soothe, and protect your skin with purely organic ingredients such as jojoba oil, calendula, and clary sage .

Let’s discuss:

As I mentioned above, jojoba oil is very similar to the skin’s natural oil (sebum). This allows jojoba to supplement the protective barrier that sebum provides to keep your skin healthy throughout the day. The similarity also makes jojoba oil great for oily skin, as it can reduce the amount of sebum your sebaceous glands produce. Jojoba oil is also non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores.[1] Jojoba has also been found to help regulate skin hormones and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Some evidence shows that it can also aid in the skin’s healing, helping to repair damage.

Calendula oil helps to reduce inflammation, which diminishes redness on your face and improves overall skin health. It also helps pull moisture into the skin and form a barrier that locks in that hydration.[2] This plant-derived oil can also boost SPF protection when combined with a sunscreen application. This will help protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays—you still need a daily morning application of sunscreen, though.[3] Calendula is also rich in antioxidants that help remove free radicals, preventing the damage they do to even the deepest layers of your skin.[4]

The inclusion of clary sage helps to reduce inflammation. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic ingredient to help protect and heal your skin from sun damage and potential skin cancers and prevent bacterial acne breakouts.[5] Clary sage can also help to tighten skin and restore a more youthful appearance.

If you are looking for a natural jojoba moisturizer, then this one will not disappoint. It is very lightweight, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue after application.

You will appreciate how easily it absorbs into the skin. Just a pea-sized amount is enough in order to get the hydration needed and all of its benefits. After application, you will feel your skin refreshed, nourished, and calm. One thing I noticed was its mattifying effect. It leaves a matte finish that makes it perfect for makeup users.

Another plus point of this moisturizer is its scent of ”nature.” When applying, you will notice a subtle natural citrus/floral scent coming from the moisturizer’s botanical ingredients. No fragrance is present, so it is also suitable for even the most easily irritated skin types. In addition, its airless bottle prevents the cream from contamination which also assists in reducing any possible irritations.

While this moisturizer has hydration capabilities that are suitable for both morning and evening, it doesn’t contain any SPF. If you are looking for a jojoba moisturizer that includes sun protection, you will definitely appreciate Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer. It is also very moisturizing and contains SPF 30, which will protect your skin from the sun throughout the day. Though, it is important to note that Erno Laszlo’s cream is thicker in texture, and also more expensive.

The good:

  • Antibacterial agents help to control outbreaks
  • Anti-inflammation ingredients help to soothe skin and reduce redness due to inflammation
  • Its lightweight formula will not clog your pores

Things to think about:

  • It may not be strong enough for those with excessively dry skin
  • Calendula oil may increase sebum production in a small proportion of people

Bottom line:

This is a great all-around moisturizer that is powerful enough for almost all skin while keeping the ingredients to a minimum, which reduces the chances for irritation and inflammation. The short list of active ingredients that deliver powerful healing and hydrating action makes this one of the best jojoba oil moisturizers.

Unique features:

  • SPF 30
  • Helps to fight and reverse the signs of aging from sun damage

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

Those who want sun protection and to prevent signs of aging related to sun damage.

Notable ingredients:

Spirulina maxima, jojoba seed oil, maris water, SPF

Overview:

Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer is a cream that will keep your skin hydrated all day while protecting it from the sun due to its inclusion of SPF. It contains a lot of notable ingredients such as jojoba seed oil, spirulina maxima, maris water, and vitamins.

We already discussed the benefits of jojoba oil in the product review above. All of these products make use of jojoba oil, so we won’t repeat that information here or in the other reviews, but it applies to all of them. Looking at the rest of the ingredients, Erno Laszlo has used a combination of three popular chemical UV filters to provide UV protection in this daytime moisturizer.

They have included enough of these ingredients to bring the SPF to 30 which, is in line with the American Academy’s of Dermatology daily sunscreen recommendations.[6] If you prefer mineral sunscreens and like to avoid chemical varieties, your best bet is a moisturizer without sunscreen. This is because they predominantly contain chemical filter ingredients. Just make sure you apply that mineral sunscreen 30 minutes before you head out for the day.

Spirulina maxima is an algae extract that has become more frequently used in skincare due to new research on its beneficial effects on the skin. Research shows that spirulina extracts can help to repair the signs of early aging. It helps to tighten skin by reducing wrinkles and promoting collagen synthesis, which improves the skin’s youthful appearance.

Marine algae are packed with ω-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, vitamins (A, B, C, E), minerals, botanical extracts, and antioxidants.[7] Vitamins A, B, and C all help reverse the signs of aging [8][9][10]. Vitamin E and antioxidants help reduce the damage from free radicals, which can prevent further premature aging of the skin.[11][12]

Erno Laszlo does a great job of keeping the skin hydrated and protected all day long. It has a thicker texture, however, it doesn’t leave a greasy residue. One thing you will notice is that the cream has a blue tint. I found that this difference in color makes it easier to ensure that you applied the cream everywhere on your face.

It comes with a small plastic spatula that helps you apply the correct amount and not contaminating the cream with your hands. However, while its jar design is magnificent and is the embodiment of luxury, I prefer skincare products that are stored in airless bottles or tubes. The reason is that they do a better job in keeping the cream clean from environmental contamination and oxidization.

As for the scent, it is important to note that this product is fragranced. Even though some users mentioned that it smells like sunscreen, I really liked its scent. I found it refreshing despite the fact that it was a little bit stronger than my usual taste. If you usually get irritated with strong fragrances, then I suggest you avoid this product and opt for a naturally scented moisturizer. Great examples are the ZELEN Life Moisturizer or Oars + Alps Natural Face Moisturizer. However, they don’t come with an SPF.

While this cream provides an excellent anti-aging firming action, it has a premium price tag that is not accessible to everyone. If you are looking for a great anti-aging option at a lower price point, then consider Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer or Ernest Supplies Protective Matte Moisturizer (for men). Both of these use organic ingredients, antioxidants, and vitamins to achieve their anti-aging results, which have been proven to be effective.

The good:

  • SPF 30 meets the AAD recommendation for a minimum daily SPF formula
  • Microalgae extracts help to reverse the signs of aging by reducing wrinkles
  • Thicker cream that provides great hydration

Things to think about:

  • It has a strong odor from the seawater ingredient, for which some users did not care
  • A thicker cream, although users noted that it didn’t apply as thick as it felt. However, if you have oily skin, it may be too heavy for you

Bottom line:

With an SPF of 30, you can reduce the number of products you put on your face, as you won’t need to apply sunscreen at the end of your morning skincare routine.

Unique features:

  • Helps fight and prevent the signs of aging
  • Reduces signs of irritation

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

Wrinkled skin will see the most benefit from this jojoba oil moisturizer. It is packed with a blend of organic fruit ingredients that help rejuvenate and revitalize skin, especially those who are beginning to see the signs of wrinkle formation.

Notable ingredients:

Jojoba oil, shea butter, resveratrol (grape juice), fruit stem cells, sunflower

Overview:

Juice Beaty is a reputable brand when it comes to premium natural skincare. Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer is further evidence of that. It is a moisturizer specifically designed to reduce the signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines while increasing firmness. Notable ingredients from its formulation are jojoba oil, shea butter, resveratrol (grape juice), fruit stem cells, and sunflower.

Besides jojoba oil, shea butter brings more hydrating and soothing properties to this moisturizer while further boosting its barrier function. The addition of sunflower oil also helps to hydrate and trap moisture in your skin’s cells. Combining all three of these powerful plant-based oils can decrease skin sensitivity; reduce irritation, redness, and inflammation; and strengthen your skin’s natural barrier.[13][14][15] This makes it great for people who are looking to combat acne.

Organic grape juice provides a punch of vitamins and resveratrol. This powerful polyphenolic antioxidant can also help to soothe irritation and redness on the skin while reducing skin damage from environmental factors. Current research shows that resveratrol is significantly more effective at absorbing free radicals than other antioxidant vitamins and derivatives currently used in skincare [16][17][18]. Due to its high antioxidant properties, resveratrol is very effective in improving the look of wrinkles and fine lines. [32]

Juice Beauty has also included fruit and plant stem cell extracts, which are a relatively new ingredient. These are 100% certified organic and are not irritating or harmful to the skin. Research on their effectiveness is still in its infancy but recent studies suggest that they can help reduce the signs of aging by eliminating free radicals and promoting healthy fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen.)[19]

Let’s be clear, no anti-aging cream provides results from day 1. So don’t expect this one to be any different. However, after 28 days (1 month) of regular usage, you will definitely appreciate the results.

The cream is lightweight and easily absorbable by the skin. However, if you have a very dry skin type then you might find its hydration not enough. If you would like greater hydration while also having decent anti-aging action, then Boscia Tsubaki Swirl – Gel might be more appropriate for you. It is formulated with camellia oil which is well-known for its anti-aging properties and rice bran oil for its hydration abilities.

Finally, while resveratrol is very effective, it should be noted that it can be a little bit irritating to very sensitive skin types. If you have sensitive skin, you will find the ZELEN Life Moisturizer more suitable as it has a shorter list of carefully considered botanical ingredients that offer great skin tolerance.

The good:

  • Packed with one of the most potent antioxidants available, this formula can help to reverse and prevent the signs of aging that come from free radicals
  • Soothing ingredients help to reduce redness, which in turn brings a more even complexion

Things to think about:

  • Some users did not appreciate the heavy citrus scent
  • Some people may have an allergic reaction to this cream, definitely need to do a spot test with this one

Bottom line:

This is a moisturizing cream packed with potent antioxidants and plant stem cells, which can help stop and reverse the signs of aging. Because the ingredients in this product are newer to the market, we highly recommend doing a spot test, as some users have reported mild to moderate allergic reactions.

Unique features:

  • Good for post-shave
  • Gentle enough for under-eye skin

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

Those who would like a gentle yet effective face cream that can be applied post-shave to the entire face should pick this one up. This jojoba oil moisturizer is gentle enough for freshly shaven skin and the delicate skin found under our eyes, yet powerful enough to hydrate and protect these delicate areas.

Notable ingredients:

Aloe vera, shea butter, alpine caribou moss, safflower oil, jojoba oil

Overview:

Oars + Alps is a brand that is slowly growing in popularity among men skincare fanatics. It is a moisturizer for men that is suitable to use on both face and eyes. It is formulated with aloe vera, shea butter, alpine caribou moss, safflower, and jojoba oil.

Let’s dive into the ingredients:

In addition to jojoba oil, aloe vera, glycerin, and safflower oil are also used to help moisturize skin, control sebum production, and soothe irritation.[20][21][22] Aloe vera is also extremely effective in reducing inflammation, healing wounds and burns, and minimize acne.[33] This makes it a great moisturizer to be used after shaving.

Cladonia stellaris (labeled as Caribou Alpine Moss) is a key ingredient here. There is little research on this specific northern Finland lichen. However, research on other lichen species shows that they are generally rich sources of antioxidants[23] and essential nutrients that reduce inflammation and redness. This leads to improved skin texture and tone. Stearic acid helps the other active ingredients penetrate the skin, leading to greater efficacy.[24] Shea butter ethyl esters provide the same moisturizing, skin softening properties of shea butter but in a form that is milder on sensitive skin, especially around the eyes.[25]

How it performs:

As can be seen from the ingredients, this moisturizer undoubtedly provides deep hydration even though it is lightweight in texture. It doesn’t leave a greasy residue or shiny finish after application which is a plus (especially for men.) It glides easily to the skin and absorbs quickly. You will definitely feel your skin calm, soft and, refreshed.

As for the scent, there is not a lot I could complain about. It is very subtle yet also refreshing too. Due to this, there are no concerns about it interfering with cologne. While this cream has many antiaging properties, if you are looking for a moisturizer that is more powerful, you should consider Ernest Supplies Protective Matte Moisturizer. In addition to jojoba, it contains an abundance of antioxidants plant-based ingredients, such as ferulic acid, acai, cupuacu, and green tea that are extremely effective in reducing signs of aging.

The good:

  • The gentle yet powerful ingredients moisturize and help to control oil production
  • This moisturizer can soothe and protect skin after the stress of shaving
  • You only need one cream for your entire face; no special under-eye cream is required

Things to think about:

  • Cladonia stellaris has yet to be thoroughly investigated (user reports indicate positive results)
  • Shea butter can cause breakouts on some acne-prone skin

Bottom line:

This is an excellent jojoba oil moisturizer you can use after shaving. It is also suitable for under-eye skin. Oars + Alps recommended applying a thinner layer on under-eye skin.

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

Those with oilier sets should give this matte moisturizer a try. Not only is it powerful, but it can help control oil and, thus, reduce shine.

Notable ingredients:

Jojoba oil, sweet almond, ferulic acid, acai, cupuacu, green tea, sodium hyaluronate

Overview:

Ernest Supplies Protective Matte Moisturizer for Men is a plant-based moisturizer that is specifically formulated to reduce signs of aging. This is achieved due to the numerous key ingredients it contains, such as jojoba oil, sweet almond, ferulic acid, acai, cupuacu, green tea, and sodium hyaluronate.

Sodium hyaluronate is the salt version of the well-known skincare ingredient hyaluronic acid, which along with jojoba and sweet almond oil, helps hydrate the skin and restore a plumper appearance. Hyaluronic acid also aids in healthy skin cell functions. Note that the effects of hyaluronic acid disappear when you stop using it. But as long as you use it consistently (i.e, daily), it can do wonders for the skin.

Sweet almond oil also has anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in vitamins E, D, A, and Omega 6. This makes it very effective in reducing wrinkles, especially when used as a night cream regularly. Also, the antioxidant properties of green tea and açaí, as well as vitamins C and E. Antioxidants reduce or maintain the number of oxidants with or without free radical activity, thereby reducing the risk of aging.

You may not be so familiar with ferulic acid. Well, it is derived from safe and natural plant sources and has its own antioxidant properties. The real magic of ferulic acid comes from combining it with vitamin C and E. Not only does it help to stabilize both of these notoriously unstable vitamins (giving you peace of mind that they aren’t breaking down as you work your way through the product) but ferulic acid can also double their effectiveness. This is especially true when it comes to enhancing their ability to protect the skin from sun damage.[26] Lastly, cupuacu is a perfect ingredient for restoring elasticity to the skin as it’s not only rich in antioxidants but also provides deep hydration.[34]

You will find this cream very lightweight and easy to apply evenly on the skin. It is not greasy or sticky, and due to its pump, you will find it very easy to apply the correct amount. You will notice some plumpness and reduced shininess right after application. However, its best anti-aging effects are noticeable between 1-3 months of daily usage.

This moisturizer has a minty scent that is fairly balanced and not overpowering. However, people with sensitivities to scents might experience some tingling effect or irritations upon application. For those of you who are susceptible, you may find a moisturizer with a milder scent more suitable, such as Oars + Alps Daily Natural Face Moisturizer and Eye Cream.

The good:

  • Ultra-lightweight and non-greasy with mattifying agents make this great for oily complexions
  • Ferulic acid doubles the effectiveness of the included antioxidants, which helps to reverse and prevent aging from sun exposure

Things to think about:

  • Ferulic acid is commonly derived from whole grains or citrus, and those with allergies to the source of the ferulic acid may also react to the ferulic acid itself, so do a spot test
  • It has a minty scent, which can cause a tingling on some user’s skin

Bottom line:

A powerful mattifying moisturizer, this one is great for those with oilier skin. Make sure to do a spot test first to ensure you aren’t allergic to the ferulic acid in this product.

Unique features:

  • Reduces wrinkle and lines
  • Reduces the visibility of dark spots

The best jojoba oil moisturizer for:

Aging skin will benefit the most from this dynamic moisturizer. It can help to fight wrinkles and dark spots, giving you a more youthful appearance.

Notable ingredients:

Tsubaki (camellia oil), wakame (Japanese sea kelp), rice bran oil, and jojoba seed oil

Overview:

Boscia Tsubaki Swirl is a moisturizer that looks like something from a science fiction show. It blends together both gel and cream in order to create a unique product that is very effective and hydrating. Its main ingredients are camellia oil, sea kelp, rice bran, and jojoba seed oil.

The not-so-secret ingredient here is camellia oil (also known as tea oil, not to be confused with tea tree oil). It is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, which can reduce the aging effects of free radicals and promote collagen synthesis while reducing the effects of collagenase—an enzyme that contributes to collagen breakdown.

Moreover, camellia oil also improves skin barrier function, keeping moisture in, and unwanted pollutants out. Tests for adverse reactions also found that this oil is non-sensitizing and does not irritate the skin.[27] Rice bran helps to reduce the visibility of dark spots on the skin while reducing oxidative stress from free radicals, which prematurely age the skin and cause fine lines and wrinkles.[28] Furthermore, it offers deep hydration due to its amount of vitamin E and fatty acids. Because of its light nature, it penetrates the skin and provides moisture from inside out.

Sea kelp is another source of antioxidants. It retains moisture while being anti-inflammatory. It assists in removing harmful toxins from the skin as well as acne blemishes.

At first glance, you may feel a little strange when applying this product to your skin. This is because of the combination of gel and cream. But it does feel very lightweight and non-greasy despite its unique combination texture. Although, it can feel a little sticky if it is overapplied but nothing over-excessive. As it is very moisturizing, it is very suitable for anyone who has combination, dry, or very dry skin types.

Similar to Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer SPF 30, it comes in a jar container making it more prone to contamination. If your skin is easily irritated or prone to acne breakouts, then I would suggest buying a moisturizer that is stored in a pump bottle. Great examples in our list are the ZELEN Life Moisturizer, Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer, and Ernest Supplies’ Protective Matte Moisturizer.

The good:

  • Top-shelf ingredients help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines
  • Rice bran helps to decrease the visibility of dark spots
  • Several users loved that it was odorless

Things to think about:

  • The gel component can leave a sticky film on the skin for a short while after application
  • This one might be too thick for those with oily skin

Bottom line:

This is the best jojoba oil moisturizer for those who want to reduce wrinkles and dark spots on their skin. It works well for dry to combo skin but may be too powerful for oily skin.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should moisturize anytime you cleanse your skin.[29] Washing your skin, while necessary, also strips away some of the natural oil that serves as a barrier to protect your skin and keep it hydrated.

Thus, immediately after you wash, you want to moisturize to add some hydration back in before your skin dries. In general, you want to wash your face and body once to twice a day or after you get sweaty.

Is jojoba oil really as good as they say?

Absolutely! Our bodies produce a natural oil called sebum, which helps to keep skin moist and aids in the barrier functioning of the skin. The best-known replacement for sebum is jojoba oil; it is the most similar to sebum.

As such, it can both fill the role of sebum for dry skin or help to curb the production of sebum in oily skin and help to control breakouts—especially in those prone to acne.

Jojoba oil’s ability to restore skin barrier function not only helps to keep skin moisturized, but it also helps to keep pollutants and other irritants out, which can reduce inflammation and its associated symptoms such as redness and itching. It is, hands-down, the best natural oil to use in moisturizers.[30]

Conclusion

Washing skin is a harsh process, even on the most resilient skin. We need to apply a moisturizer after every wash to keep skin at its healthiest. Because you will be using a moisturizer daily, you want the best and safest products.

You also need to choose your product based on your skin type. With the information we have given you here, you can make more informed choices for you and your skin!
